A baby Mississippi squirrel falls from a tree and finds a home with a family of cats and learns how to purr in the process.
It’s not unusual for mother cats to adopt other animals, they are very maternal and cross fostering adding other species to their litter seems natural. In this case not only is the cat adapting well, but the squirrel is taking on cat traits and has learned how to purr. I wonder if he will eat cat food when he grows up?
Post your pictures of unusual pet pairings on Pet Pictures. Most unusual picture may win a prize.
It doesn’t take much to keep kittens or cats amused. Their curiosity gives them the uncanny ability to make just about anything interesting and cat toys are just the beginning. Something as simple as a can keep them entertained for hours. Doesn’t matter what kind, although the plastic shopping bags seem to be a favorite, they crinkle. Big bags seem to be places to hide from the world, almost like a cave.
Play is good exercise, stimulates the brain, and keeps a cat young and healthy. So you say your cat is lazy, just not interested. Put some cat food inside, or some cat treats inside and watch the fun.
Post inspired by 13 Ways cats Use Bags, you can’t have too many cats in a bag.

Right on the heels of last weeks Feline Renal Formula recall now comes word of an additional 50+ Iams and Eukanuba cat and dog foods from the same plant may be contaminated with Salmonella and have been recalled.
I understand the need to get information out as soon as possible, but the last recall was a Sunday, when the information line was closed, and this falls on a Friday night. Cat owners will not be able to reach Proctor & Gamble (since their hot line is only open Mon-Fri), or in many cases, their veterinarian. Many of these cat food diets are for animals that have medical problems and pet owners will have questions and concerns.
This is list is long and I hesitated in posting it due to the length, thought a link to the Iams site would be sufficient. But I was feeding one of the below products to my cat I would want to know immediately and not want to go to an additional website.
The following products may be contaminated with Salmonella and should be discarded.

Earlier we announced the recall of Feline Pride Natural Chicken Formula. Originally the only product affected was manufactured on 6/10/2010,. The FDA and Natures Variety has now extended that recall to include the following dates
Felines Pride Raw Food Natural Chicken Formula produced on both 6/10/10 and 6/21/10.
Having experience in the pet manufacturing industry I know that batches of pet food are not made every day, or even every week in a small company. This means that two subsequent batches have tested positive. Whatever steps Feline Pride took in trying to correct their problem did not work.
Being a small pet food company is a good concept, but it does pose challenges in quality control. Small companies do not have the cash flow and profits needed to do the expensive quality control testing. Even medium size pet food companies have budgets that allow for nutritional and quality assurance. Large corporations like Purina have in-house quality control labs and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on testing, they can’t risk the liability.
Out sourced testing is not cheap. According to MidWest Laboratories a full AAFCO nutritional panel cost over $2000, although most pet food companies run a proximate analysis of $45.00. Mycotoxin screening costs over $100.00 and a Salmonella test only $25.00. Doing the basic salmonella test sounds simple and cheap, but it’s far from simple. There are several critical control points at which salmonella testing should be done.
If any positive samples are returned at any stage above the product is disposed. For export purposes multiple representative samples are required of the finished product, depending on the batch size this is often 10 samples from a documented random lot.
If the pet food facility does not have an in-house lab samples must be sent out and the product sits and waits until the test results are released 24 to 48 hours later. Now there is the additional fees of overnight shipping. Waiting product is a haven for bacterial growth. As you can see testing without an in-house lab can run into several hundred and even thousands of dollars per batch,
Samples are only as good as the representative sample. For example if bread is left on the counter too long a corner of a slice may mold. The whole loaf is not bad, but if a sample was taken from the opposite end the test would turn up negative.
So where does all of this lead? What lesson is to be learned? Small companies can make safe pet food, if they use quality sources of ingredients and work with a pet food manufacturer that has high standards. Large pet food companies can make mistakes, but have systems in place to catch them faster.
To play is safe, choose a pet food company with a long standing tradition of quality and safety. Check the U.S. Food and Drug Administration list for recalled pet food, and thirdly choose a company that has a quality statement on their website. If they export their pet food then there is a very good chance there quality assurance program is very in-depth and comprehensive.
Below are some cat foods that meet the criteria, including exporting products.
Nutri Source Cat (company website)
Pro Pac Hairball Reduction Formula
If know any other cat foods that meet the above criteria I’d be more than glad to add them to the list. Please send me a comment and add me to your blogroll.

Itch, scratch, bite, scratch, itch, bite some more. A vicious cycle that is unhealthy for your pet but can be unhealthy for the humans in the household as well. How do you keep fleas and ticks away from the pets you love and out of your house? It’s not difficult if you remember these 5 Keys to Success in Controlling Fleas.
Experts at Texas A&M University recommend using flea medication, with products such as Frontline, and home treatment as part of the solution. Old-fashioned spring cleaning, timely follow-up treatments and daily observation is the second half of the battle.
1. Sanitation
This means the entire house, everywhere, not just where your dog or cat lives the most. Pay the closest attention to your pets bedding by regularly washing blankets and vacuuming carpeted areas where your dog or cat sleeps. Vacuum the nocks and crannies, baseboards, and under the coach, everywhere! Simple vacuuming will remove 60% of flea eggs. Pet treatment products, such as Capstar or Frontline, will kill any hatching larvae that later jump on your pet.
2. Treating Pets
Tackle the problem at the start, when you see the first flea. Capstar is a quick kill non-prescription tablet that kills existing fleas and Frontline products have a residual effect to prevent future, are just two non-prescription monthly medications to give dogs and cats that effectively.
Make sure to read label directions for each product, as there is a separate product, Frontline Plus for Cats, specifically for cats and not dogs. Frontline Plus for Cats is a topical “spot-on” product that kills existing fleas and keeps killing them for six weeks. That’s six weeks of relief!
3. Environmental Treatment
Only 5% of fleas actually live on your pet, the rest live in the surrounding environment. Major infestations in the house call for stronger measures than just washing and vacuuming. Look for products that contain both for total house control. Before using foggers and environmental treatments carefully read label directions. Don’t forget about the yard, if your dog or cat spends a lot of time outside. If it has a high population of fleas then it is best to contact a professional pest control expert.
4. Observe
There is nothing more important in the control than a watchful eye. You may not see the little critters, but they leave tell tale black specks of “dirt” which is actually dried blood. Check the stomach, the base of the tale, and behind the ears for this “dirt” along with sudden scratching and hair loss.
5. Follow-up
Not only are flea pupae are difficult to kill, but over time fleas can become resistant to the same chemicals and additional treatment is sometimes need a week to 1o days later.

Kittens are fluffy balls of fun and love. After much discussion, everyone agrees that a kitten would be a wonderful addition to the family. The internet is full of advice and it can be overwhelming! Cat toys, kitten food, brushes, catnip, flea control, health care, the list seems to be endless. Soon you might just find yourself overwhelmed!
Don’t worry though, bringing a new kitten home are not difficult if you start off with theses 5 Top Tips for New Kitten Care
Find a Veterinarian
The health of your new family member is important and there are many sources to find veterinarians, but the best is word of mouth. First, ask your pet loving friends for recommendations and make an appointment for the first week that you bring your kitten home. Besides a health examination, including vaccinations, your vet may suggest Frontline Plus for Cats to keep away flea and ticks.
Get the Right Kitten Food
Remember a kitten is still a baby, and is not ready to eat adult cat food. Before you pick up your kitten, ask what kind of kitten food she is currently eating, and purchase the same brand. After talking to your veterinarian, an informed decision can be made to stay on the same pet food, or if change is needed.
Stock up on Pet Supplies
Just like children, kittens have four main jobs in life: eating, pooping, sleeping, and playing, just maybe not in that order. It makes sense to have a food and water bowl, a litter box, a cat bed or condo, and cat safe toys. Kittens love to play and chase small toys; it mimics their natural hunting behaviors. A jumping kitten is very cute, its’ amazing how high they can jump, but remember kittens grow up to be cats and you don’t want your cat jumping on the kitchen counter and other off limit areas. Provide climbing trees with multiple ledges and tunnels and your cat will be very happy.
Control the Scratching & Clawing
This goes in an area of its own. Cats need to scratch; it is not only natural, but also essential for good nail and muscle health. However, the last thing you want is your new kitten clawing the living room furniture so provide a variety of scratching options with sisal-covered trees or catnip filled cat mats made from corrugated cardboard. These will provide exercise and keep your furniture and woodwork scratch-free.
Enjoy the Love
There is nothing more satisfying than listening to your cat purr. It is soothing and represents sheer contentment and love. Give your new kitten your time and lots of love. This is the easiest to give and receive. What you get in return is the love of a regal member of the feline family.
